New Zealand Season Review - What a Great Season So many good days and good fish.... read about it and have a look at some of the happy fisher folk.
We have just finished another great season in Southland and Otago. It has been another dry year with not a lot of general rain falling. There has been rain in the catchments but generally river levels were low. November produced some good fishing and late snow made the Mataura quite big and cold. The weather changes very quickly and by the end of the month we were wet wading. Green Beetles were seen right through and into December so some fish came to the dry. February and March were very low in water levels but there was quite a big flood in early March due to some big storms in the headwaters. One of the trips could not fish the Mataura as it had a lot of color but other rivers in the area cleared quite fast so some great fishing was had. It goes to show how good this area is as there was plenty of other rivers and streams to fish. Because of the free draining soils the water levels were back down to the low levels experienced in Summer which made for good presentation and careful stalking. The low levels bring out the better fish from under the willows and their condition was fantastic. The Mayfly hatches were unpredictable and only late March and April produced good hatches in the afternoons. The April fishing produced some great fish in superb condition. The days are shorter but the Mayflies are more predictable and a lot less anglers about. Some of the more popular rivers get a lot of traffic but there is so much water that we rarely see other anglers.
Didymo is never going to go away and it is surprising how little we see of it. The big floods in August last year really cleaned out the effected rivers and the big spike in March did the same. The worst would have to be the Waiau below Te Anau but it certainly hasn’t affected the fishing as the drift dives done by Fish and Game show good numbers of fish.
Felt soles are certainly on their way out as I feel they will be banned from the start of next season. Rubber or Aquastealth soles are fine and are certainly easier to clean. The Red House is well prepared for the evening ritual of cleaning and drying gear ready for the following day and also for getting gear ready to come back into Australia. Overall it was a good season in sometimes tough conditions and hopefully the weather patterns will get back to normal bringing the Mayflies out through the day.
This is a great area to fish and if you, your partner or mate are keen on seeing it contact us and get on to one of our trips. We cater for all standards of anglers and can organize separate dates for 4 anglers or less. Andy and I are looking forward to next season and hope you can join us. Cheers and good fishing,
Murray
