South Island - Fly Fishing Adventures

High Country Fly fishing is pleased to offer fully escorted and guided fly fishing tours to the world famous trout waters of southern New Zealand.

We are now entering our 6th season of trips that are based in Lumsden, Northern Southland.

There are over thirty rivers and streams within an hours drive of Lumsden which gives the guides plenty of options in all weather conditions. The area is mainly brown trout but there are some fantastic rainbow waters to the west in the Te Anau area.

The trips are limited to 6 places and include Airport transfers from either Queenstown or Dunedin.

The accommodation is very comfortable cottage style with Breakfast, lunch and all but one dinner included. One evening we go to a great little local restaurant the Mayfly for dinner and this meal is not included in the package.  We use NZ premier guides as well as Andrew and Murray who have many years experience fishing the South Island.

We are now taking bookings for the following dates

16th to the 23rd of November 2009

1st to the 8th of March 2010

12th to the 19th of April 2010

If these dates do not suit you or you wish to put your own group of 4 or less together we can organize a tour for you.

For details of the trips you can either email or ring us and we will send out a brochure. Email Murray, highfly@southernphone.com.au or phone 0402827657

New Zealand Season Review - What a Great Season

We have just finished our 5th season in Southland and Otago and it was good to see some average rainfalls over spring, summer and Autumn.

Even though there was good falls it doesn’t take long for the rivers to drop to low levels and with the use of more irrigators this will only continue!

November produced its usual early snow but Southland has many small rivers that clear quickly so we always have plenty of options. The Rainbow streams to the west produce great fishing and they are always in good condition.

February and March had their share of rain but this kept the water levels up and gave us lots of fishing opportunities. Cicadas were a bit slower this year as it was not a warm summer. Mayflies were not consistent until later in the season but the ripples produced some fantastic fishing and the fish were all in fantastic condition.

This was the first season where rubber boots had to be used and we found that this was not too much of a problem. We all agreed that studs combined with soft rubber proved to be the best as some of the lower streams that have shallow tails proved to be quite slippery if you didn’t have studs. Because of the good rain falls we saw very little Didymo unless you were on rivers that flowed out of lakes were they get few big spikes in water levels that flush out the algae.

Looking back at the season we had some great fishing and some tough fishing which is pretty typical of the South but when this is combined with amazing scenery, great conditioned fish, superb food and wine I can’t think of a better place to be flyfishing.

We cater for all standards of anglers and all guides used are accredited FFF casting instructors.

We are looking forward to next season and if you or a group of friends are keen on a south island adventure get in touch with us and we will send you out more details.

Cheers and good fishing,
