What's Happening in the Region?

FISHING REPORT

Well , with some good rain over the region in the first week of Feb, rivers are looking in great shape. Fish are out feeding right through the day, mostly taking dry flies.

After some very hot windy weeks through Jan ,  the cooler, wetter weather has had its effect and fishing has been very good.

Thredbo river has been fishing well over the last couple weeks, with the dry fly working best. Early and late in the day it is also worth using weighted nymphs.

Moonbah has been a bit slow , however with the rain there over the past few days it should pick up. Gungarlin river has been great fishing with large numbers of fish caught. Upper Murray has also produced some good fishing , right through the day feeding mostly on caddis. Swampy around Keebles has also been good..... more

FELT SOLE BAN IN NEW ZEALAND

The New Zealand Minister for Conservation has indicated in principle that felt sole wading boots will be banned from the 1st of October.

This appears to be a done deal and has already caused a stir in New Zealand as there is going to be a safety issue especially with the older or unstable angler.

There is some quite good sticky rubber boots around at the moment and Aquastealth 5/10 compound is the best that we have found. There are some new compounds coming out that have been tested but these wont be available till towards the end of the year.

We have been using Aquastealth in New Zealand for the last couple of years and have found them to be quite adequate and we have both studded and plain.

Some clients brought along Rubber sole wading boots but these were down right dangerous and we had to apply studs so they had some grip. When you apply the studs you have to be careful where you put them as they will turn into skates on the bigger boulders so usually you put some at the toes and some on the heel.

We are stocking Korkers that have an Aquastealth sole that can be interchanged and now we have in stock the latest Vision boot that comes in two styles, one with studs and one just plain. The plain are popular we anyone who has a boat as the studs don’t scrape on the bottom of the hull.

If you have any questions about boots give us a call or e-mail us for info.

I am sure there is going to a big debate on this matter and there is a possibility felts will be banned in Tasmania and maybe all of Australia.

Aquastealth with Studs $229.00 and plain Aquastealth $199.00

FEDERATION OF FLYFISHERS

FFF have sent out to New Zealnd and Australia this month three master casters to do testing for people interested in becoming a Fly Casting Instructor. It is a great idea and we really need eventually a accreditation to reach a level to instruct fly casting. I was tested to become a Certified Casting Instructor last Thursday and passed after much studying, reading and practising my casts. It is a full on test with a question and answer paper and then a one on one test with the examiner. The learning curve is amazing and I now have a fully strung up rod at the back door so I can go out and do 5 minutes practice any time rather than pull out the rod and reel which just takes up a bit to much time as a few minutes out on the lawn does wonders for your casting. To watch these master casters in action was a humbling experience and they only want to make you get better and understand how a cast works. Check out www.fedflyfishers.org as it is a wealth of information on all aspects of flyfishing and flycasting. You can also talk to me if you are coming through or send me an e-mail.

NEW PRODUCTS

High Country Outfitters has a big range of new products coming in for this season.

Sage have released two new rods into their range and some new reels as well. The fast action TCR models have been replaced by the TCX range made from Generation 5 technology and are slightly lighter and a bit more user friendly. This range of rods is not for everyone as they are quite fast but in the right hands they have fantastic performance in the toughest conditions. Punching big flies into the wind is what these rods do and the saltwater range I am sure will be popular. Sage have replaced the FLI with the Flight range and are very similar to the older models with only a few cosmetic changes. They start at a 7ft 3wt 4pc and are fantastic value for money. Great performance at a great price.

The 2500 series reels have been replaced by the 4500 series with Carbon Fibre spools available. The 2500 series spools fit the new model 4500’s and they use the same drag system. There is also the 2000 series in two sizes for 5/6 and 8wt rods that will prove popular as they are priced well and have sealed drags. We also ordered in the latest in T-Shirts and Caps for the Sage fans.

With the banning of Felt Soles in New Zealand there are some new model boots on the market. Vision have a great boot that is available in Aquastealth with or without studs and we now have the SIMMS Rivershed boot in Aquastealth and they would have to be the toughest boot around. Lots of protection around the toes and ankle.

New Waders from Vision, the Flywater are going to rattle the budget end as they have released a 5 layer chest wader for under $300.00. Riverworks have updated their B5 wader with a new shape and lots of detail. These will be available from November and their B3 is in stock now.

In Flylines, the very successful Sharkskin from Scientific Anglers Mastery series have brought out a Delta Taper that is designed to turn over big flies for the bass market and also are very good in the wind. This could be a great line for New Zealand and Tasmania where you always come across windy days. The Rio Gold is proving a popular line and the Rio Grand is good for the fast action rods. Their Selective Taper 11 is a great trout line and perfect for dry fly presentations.

C & F have some great waterproof fly boxes for fresh and saltwater  as well as the big range for all sizes of flies.

We also have a good range of DVD’s in including the new Fishbum 1 Mongolia, A Foam Odyssey and many more.

As you see we have lots of new goodies so call in or give us a call for all the info you need for your fly fishing adventure.

We are open 7 days
