THE BLOW FLY
During the hot months of the last two seasons, the blow fly has accounted for several fish in the three to five pound class and at least two larger fish have been hooked and lost on the Thredbo river.
The blow fly is tied in exactly the same way as the Royal Humpy but tied with a holographic blue mylar tinsel underbody instead of the red floss one found in the Royal Humpy.
Materials:
Hook: TMC100 or similar, size #10, 12, and 14.
Thread: Black unithread, 6/0 0r 8/0
Tail: Moose body hair or similar
Wings: White calf tail.
Underbody: Hollographic blue mylar or tinsel. (uni axel or Benowie)
Overbody: Black dear hair.
Hackle: Two good quality black cock hackles.
Procedure:
1. Tie in the white calf tail wings at the point ¾ of the way along the hook shank. Cut the stubs of the hair to form a taper towards the bend of the hook and bind down with the thread.
2. Tie in the tail and trim the stubs to half way along the shank and bind down over the wing stubs. Take the thread back to just in front of the tail.
3. Tie in the hair which will form the overbody and again cut the stubs to the half shank length and bind the stubs down, ending up with the thread at the half shank point.
4. Tie in the hollographic blue tinsel at the half shank point and wind it down to the tail and then back to the half shank point, tie off and cut off the excess tinsel.
5. Bring the overbody hair forward over the top of the underbody and tie off at the half shank point. Cut off the excess.
6. Tie in two good quality black cock hackles by their tips between the body and the wings. Wrap the first hackle forwards with even turns behind and in front of the wings. Tie off and remove the excess hackle. Now wind the second hackle through the first, tie off and remove the excess. Form the head and varnish.
7. Go fishing!
